Horticulturist, Epcot

First things first: Let’s answer the obvious question.

Yes. As a Walt Disney World cast member (that’s what they call their employees), Les Frey can go in any Walt Disney World theme park and ride any ride whenever he wants. How cool is that!

Well, there is a bit of a downside: “We have to wait in lines, just like everyone else,” he says.Les Frey

For the past 17 years, Frey has been a horticulturist at The Land Pavilion at Disney’s Epcot theme park.

“I began working in our tissue culture lab and now I manage that lab as well as several greenhouses where we showcase over 60 different food crops from around the world to Epcot guests,” Frey says.

As a Disney student coordinator, Frey has recruited several Purdue students to serve internships in the Epcot Science Department.

“I share my knowledge and training with our interns so they can be better scientists, growers and educators when they start their careers,” Frey says.

“I don’t think, in college, that you realize the potential that you can achieve in your career. It makes me proud to hear that our former interns have been accepted into graduate school to further their education, that they are doing research in Antarctica, or that they are working in places like Africa, Bangladesh or Tajikistan teaching agricultural principles to others.”

The voice of experience: Always believe in yourself and work hard to achieve your goals and aspirations. Don’t ever second-guess yourself. Make the most of your opportunities.  —  Les Frey
