150 Years - Land Grant Mission

Remembering land grant roots will help guide our future

This year marks an important milestone for Purdue University. We join the more than 100 institutions in the land grant university system to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act, the landmark legislation that made practical education in agriculture and the mechanic arts available to more people. In addition to creating access to education, it also established a responsibility to serve our state and the nation.

The Morrill Act laid the foundation for the Purdue Agriculture learning, discovery and engagement programs highlighted in this issue:

• Learning communities that help students successfully transition to college
• Research that leads to earlier detection of cancer-cell formation
• Woodlands management programs that preserve Indiana's forests

The anniversary of this now-historic stroke of a pen is an opportunity to consider how a world-class land grant College of Agriculture moves forward in the 21st century. I look forward to working with our stakeholders to make Purdue Agriculture a national model of land grant excellence.
