Throckmorton-Purdue Agricultural Center (TPAC)
The Throckmorton-Purdue Agricultural Center (TPAC)
includes over 1,000 managed acres in southern
Tippecanoe County, Indiana. Dr. George Throckmorton
gave the original farm to Purdue in 1935 in memory
of his father.
Research
at TPAC focuses on production techinques, soil fertility, yield,
and pesticides in commodity grain crops and horticultural crops
testing studies in
- Corn,
- Soybeans,
- Wheat, and
- Canola
- Mint
- Tomatoes
- Melons
- Grapes
- Apples
- Paw Paws
In 1997, TPAC staff began managing the O'Neall Memorial Farm and
started the process of moving horticultural and specialty crop
research to the newly acquired Meig's Farm, located near TPAC.
This new location was put into a trust by Samuel G. Meigs to be
utilized by Purdue.
At this location, which has been extensively tiled for optimum
drainage, researchers are conducting vegetable, tree/vine, and
specialty crop research. 160 acres of the Meigs farm is set up
for both drip and overhead irrigation. Work in weed
control, yield and quality enhancement, and alternative crop
development are just a few of the other areas being explored.
A wetlands mitigation project in conduction with
the Purdue Research Foundation provides students,
wildlife biologists, and preservation groups the
ability to observe changes in the types of wildlife
and the patterns of activity around the wetlands.
An experimental septic system also provides a
training opportunity for septic installers and
county sanitarians on how to lessen man's affect
on the rural and urban watersheds.
