Call for Applications, Belcher Chair for Environmental Sustainability

Through the generosity of Dick Belcher and his late wife, Suzanne, the College of Agriculture is pleased to solicit applications for the Belcher Chair for Environmental Sustainability. Language from the endowment agreement specifies the Belchers’ desire to “establish an endowed 'green' chair in the University's College of Agriculture to support leadership, discovery and/or engagement in the area of environmental sustainability.” This chair is endowed at $1.5 million and will provide the holder with a stream of funds for programmatic support and an opportunity to supplement their salary (one month). The total distribution for programmatic support and salary supplement is approximately $50,000 per year, depending on the endowment distribution policy and subject to the College policy on distributions. (See Information for Faculty on College web site for details.) Application materials due to Dean Jay Akridge by May 13, 2016.

Applications are open to any tenured full professor in the College of Agriculture (as of July 1, 2016) working in the broad area of “environmental sustainability”. This would include, but is certainly not limited to, individuals with teaching, research, and/or extension responsibilities in environmental policy, ecology, soil and water engineering, nutrient management, natural resources management, sustainable crop or livestock production, human dimensions of environmental decisions, renewable energy, sustainability of building/landscape design, to name a few. (Please note that current Named and Distinguished faculty are not eligible to apply.)

To apply for the position, please send a 2-page (maximum) letter describing your plans for using the earnings stream from the Chair to build/enhance your research/teaching/extension program in the broad area of environmental sustainability.  In addition, please provide a current CV. These materials should be sent to Dean Jay Akridge by May 13, 2016. The Chair will be committed for an initial period of 5 years with a mandatory review at that time. There is the potential for renewal of a maximum of 5 more years.

The application materials will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of the four Associate Deans in the College and three current Named/Distinguished faculty members.  This selection committee will make a recommendation to the Dean for final approval.
