Purdue University accepting nominations for Hovde Award

Nominations are sought for the 2008 Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence in Educational Service to Rural People of Indiana.

The award, sponsored by the Indiana Farm Bureau, is given annually to a Purdue University staff member who has made outstanding educational contributions to the well-being and progress of rural Indiana. The winner will receive an $800 cash prize and a plaque.

A permanent display with the award winners’ names is in the Agricultural Administration Building at Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.

The award is named in honor of Hovde who served as Purdue’s president from 1946-1971. He believed in higher education and sought to put it in reach of every person.

“Hovde demanded excellence in teaching, research and service and dedication to Purdue’s role as Indiana’s land-grant institution,” said Jay Akridge, interim dean of Purdue Agriculture.

Any current Purdue staff member—from any school, division or unit of the university—who has gone above and beyond the call of duty and has an excellent record of leadership and service to rural Indiana is eligible for nomination.

Nominations are due by September 19 and may be submitted by individuals or organizations serving or interested in the well-being of rural Indiana.

A one page letter of nomination and at least one, but no more than five, additional one-page letters of support should be submitted electronically to naldridge@purdue.edu, by fax to Nancy Aldridge at (765) 494-7420 or by mail to Hovde Award Committee, Purdue University, Ag Administration Building, Room 114, 615 W. State Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907.
