TEACHERS DISCOVER THAT WOOD IS GOOD

The Forestry & Natural Resources Department at Purdue University hosted the second annual “Wood Is Good” summer course designed for high school teachers and career counselors on May 29th - June 9th, 2000.  Enrollment tripled compared to the last year.

Wood is Good is a two-week long, graduate-credit class where teachers learn about wood, where it comes from and how it is used. During the first week, teachers complete their reading assignments over the Internet. During the second week, they gain a hands-on insight into primary and secondary wood products manufacturing through a 2-day industry tour. Each day, teachers are provided with a demonstration, instructions, and a kit for 2 experiments that they can replicate in their classrooms. These include paper making, wood properties and wood identification. Teachers also learn how to turn a log into lumber on a portable sawmill. To complete their class, they are required to present two lectures or organize wood products industry field trips at their home institution.

This year’s highlights included cutting of an ash log into square turning stock that teachers will use in their shops to turn baseball bats from; a demonstration of a new CNC router donated to the FNR department by Thermwood Inc.; and a barbeque during a field trip in the woods.

Indiana Hardwood Lumberman Association and Forest Products Society student club provided some of the instructional materials.
