Grassland Management Workshop
Jasonville, Indiana
September 13 and 14, 2006

The Indiana Chapter and North Central Section of the Wildlife Society, and Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources conducted a continuing education workshop for wildlife professionals in the Midwest in the fall of 2006. The workshop was held at the Indiana DNR Reclamation office in Jasonville with field sessions held at Goose Pond. Researchers and experts presented information on management techniques to enhance grasslands for wildlife, to maintain a healthy mix of warm seaon grasses and forbs, and to control invasive plant species in grasslands.

Goose Pond is a glacial basin near Linton, Indiana that was once an expansive, thriving wetland. The land has been pumped and drained dry since early in the last century. Today, efforts are underway to restore the area's wildlife splendor and provide free public access. In 2000, the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) purchased a permanent easement from the landowner and began restoration of the wetland and wildlife habitat on the property. Goose Pond is now one of the nation's largest Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) easements with a total of 7,068 acres in Greene County. Restoration efforts include 25 miles of earthen dikes and a permanent 2,750-acre shallow water impoundment. Click here for more information about the project including photos, maps, and more.
