Northern Red Oaks have dark, slightly furrowed bark. It looks like it has “ski tracks” (lighter stripes) running down its upper bark! The leaves are also very unique, as they have very pointy bristles (tips) on the leaf lobes.

The wood of this tree is extremely porous. You can actually blow soap bubbles or smoke lengthwise through it! There are many Northern Red Oaks near this trail stop.
