The
Tuliptree is Indiana’s state tree. It has a tall, straight trunk
and its wood is resistant to termites. Both of these characteristics
made it a good choice for dugout canoes and log cabins.

The bark
of the Tuliptree is dark gray with light gray furrows. One identifying
characteristic is the way the furrow ridges look as if they have been
“ironed flat.”
A big Bur
Oak tree is also visible from this stop. Bur Oaks were among the
first trees to move into Indiana’s prairie centuries ago, which eventually
paved the way for other forest trees to move into the area
later. Look closely and you'll see a large stick and twig Cooper’s
Hawk nest in this tree!
