Grade 6-7 Post-Visit Activity

Tall Tree Tales

With the students' newfound knowledge of using Abney levels and Biltmore Sticks, they will now be sent, in teams, in search of the largest trees growing in their local community. Each team will be trying to find the tree(s) with the largest diameter, height, and estimated board feet of lumber. Their results will be compared against the state and federal "Big Tree Registers." The exercise can be extended to include building displays and/or adding research on why different trees grow different places.
