Moving a Mature Tree

On October 21, 2000 a 34” diameter tree in West Lafayette, IN was moved from Wood Street to Airport Park  Moving a tree of this size required a team of specialists who first dug a circle 2 feet deep and 20 feet in diameter around the tree.  Taking as many roots with the tree as possible, the next step was to pound steel pipes under the tree to provide a base for lifting it.  A crane lowered chains which were carefully threaded through the branches and hooked to the corners of the newly formed bed.  Slowly the tree was lifted and placed on a low-boy trailer, and on Saturday morning  the tree began its journey of 1 mile trip which took about 1.5 hours.
