DIVERSITY IN AGRICULTURE

Promoting Diversity in the College of Agriculture

Vision- The College of Agriculture, under the leadership of Dean Randy Woodson, is determined to create a climate that fosters and values diversity and welcomes and supports all students, faculty, and staff.

Goals and Strategies- The 2003-2008 Strategic Plan for the College includes this goal among our highest priorities:

Goal: To increase diversity among students, faculty, and staff.

Strategies:
  • Recruit students, faculty, and staff to achieve diversity that reflects Indiana’s population.
  • Enhance efforts to retain minority students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strengthen relationships with faculty at select 1890s colleges and universities and other appropriate institutions to recruit minorities.
Diversity in the student body and in the faculty and staff must be increased to help create an atmosphere where people of diverse backgrounds and views feel welcome and can contribute to the improvement of the entire school. The college must facilitate opportunities for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni to develop a shared understanding and appreciation of diversity’s importance and benefits. In addition, the college must continue to foster a climate of respect so it will be a desirable place to work and learn.

Goal
: To build awareness of diversity issues among students, faculty, and staff.

Strategies:
  • Develop a mindset of respect, and encourage faculty and student exchanges, sabbaticals, and similar activities that bring diverse international and domestic perspectives to the campus.
  • Create opportunities to expose students to diversity issues throughout the curriculum and through exchanges with historically black institutions, Hispanic-serving universities, and tribal colleges.
  • Develop courses and programs of study, including study abroad, that challenge students to examine their professional studies through the lenses of many disciplines and diverse cultures.
