Twisted rocks along a trail in Death Valley National Monument, CA. A group of us used to go hiking here every March when I was a graduate student at the University of California, Davis. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
Epiphyllum guatemalensis in flower. These only seem to open up when there is a new moon on the darkest nights of the year. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
A clump of mussels exposed to the sun near tide pools in La Jolla, CA. I did not expect to see those so far out of the water. This bed extended for about ten feet in total. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
A seal suns itself on the beach by tide pools in La Jolla, CA. A group of seals was soaking up the sun in the middle of January and were expected to produce pups soon. This one had just woken up. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
A garter snake eating a toad in my back yard, in Lafayette, IN. I had seen the snake hanging around earlier in the day and grabbed my camera when I noticed it having a meal. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
A Joshua tree at sunset in Joshua Tree National Park, CA. These yuccas grow in a very restricted range in the deserts of southern California, and are mostly dormant in the middle of January. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
Fiery sumac leaves in autumn along a road in Wageningen, the Netherlands. I had a Saturday afternoon off while on a business trip in mid October and took my camera to the local arboretum. I noticed the sun hitting these leaves just right. They were not as interesting earlier in the day, nor the next morning. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
A male tiger swallow butterfly sampling nectar from an Agastache flower in my side yard. There seemed to be a lot of these for a couple of weeks during the summer of 2008. This one posed for a minute or two while soaking up the late afternoon sun. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
A frosty crocus in early spring waits for the morning sun in my front yard. This was taken early one morning before work.(photo by Steve Goodwin)
Rock formations on the beach at Pennington Bay, Kangaroo Island, South Australia. This beach is good for fishing and surfing but occasionally can have dangerous rip tides. I visited here as part of a group tour. The time of day was not ideal for photography and it was hard to find the right spot. I had to wait a while for it to be vacant. (photo by David Kabal)
A double-saddle butterfly fish swims over soft corals at the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. I bought an underwater camera the day before I left and tried to figure out how to use it on the flight to Australia. Taking pictures of moving subjects with a new camera while snorkeling was difficult. These soft corals sometimes covered large areas of the reef. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
A solitary butte stands out against the clouds in the American southwest. This was part of the roadside scenery while driving to one of the National parks and warranted a stop for photography. (photo by Steve Goodwin)
