President Richard Nixon, here chatting with Butz in the Oval Office, appointed Butz secretary of agriculture.
Butz also served as secretary of agriculture under President Gerald Ford, until Butz was forced to resign in 1976.
Always known for his sense of humor, Butz holds court on Air Force One in this 1976 photo.
