Aggie to head Academic Programs
By Tom Campbell
Dale Whittaker's appointment as Purdue's associate dean of agriculture
and director of academic programs represents the perfect marriage of
job and employee.
"My true love is student learning," says Whittaker, currently
professor and associate department head of agricultural engineering
at Texas A&M University.
"The position at Purdue is a job description I would have written
for myself if somebody had said 'pick a place and do anything you want.'"
The appointment represents a homecoming for Whittaker, who earned his
master's (1984) and doctoral (1987) degrees in agricultural engineering
at Purdue. In July, Whittaker, 40, will replace Karl Brandt, who has
been a faculty member since 1966. Brandt is stepping out of his role
as associate dean and director of academic programs to return to the
classroom to teach biochemistry.
"Karl has been the voice of wisdom for our academic programs for
more than 17 years," says Dean of Agriculture Victor Lechtenberg.
"While we will miss his advice and counsel, I am pleased that he
will have the opportunity to continue his work in the classroom."
