1. Best advice
The importance of thinking clearly and analytically, and to keep learning.
I learned the value of applying broad judgment to problems and the importance
of thinking creatively about responses to change, which is at the heart
of progress and growth.
2. Boiler memory
The Ag Night banquet my junior year brought together special people
and memories. I was the guest speaker. My parents, friends, fraternity
brothers, professors and many students from the College of Agriculture
were present. It made me think about what was important to me as an
ag student and to talk about those issues with the people who mattered
most.
3. Thank you
Don Paarlberg inspired me with his integrity, intellect and judgment.
He had confidence in me that strengthened my character and raised my
aspirations. But Dave Pfendler, Earl Butz, Charles French, Bob Taylor,
Sam Postlethwait, Milton Snodgrass, Helen Schleman, O.D. Roberts, Beverly
Stone and Barbara Cook were among many at Purdue who made a difference
in my career.
4. Great escape
Read biographies, novels and writings on public policy and current events.
I enjoy writing, speaking, travel, time with my wife and family, keeping
up with old friends and escaping to a little spot in Florida.
In his words:
"The Purdue College of Agriculture shaped my career plans and opportunities.
I was constantly inspired to do my best, and I received a great deal
of encouragement."
