Just before the start of last year’s race, Purdue graduates Sarah Kessans (left) and Emily Kohl pose for a photo with their boat, American Fire, docked in La Gomera, one of the Canary Islands.
After being rescued by the Stavros Niarchos midway in their attempt to row across the Atlantic, Kessans and Kohl spent a few more days at sea learning how to sail a tall ship.
Ten days after being rescued at sea, Kohl (left) and Kessans explored the volcanoes of St. Lucia.
With nothing but ocean below, Kessans treads carefully on the topmost royal sail as the Stavros Niarchos heads into the Barbados port.
