| Some soils go through a lot before they are used in the Purdue greenhouses. Research nematologist Jamal Fagihi, PhD ’83, pumps steam into a wagonload of dirt at the nematology lab (left photo). The 180-degree steam kills insects, weed seeds and undesirable organisms in the soil. It is a process that probably was familiar on a smaller scale to the agronomy department of 1930. In this J.C. Allen photo (at right), agronomy department faculty member Dr. Mains (in suit) and his assistants monitor wheat varieties infected with rust. |
