1940s
Gerald M. Hess, BS ’40, Gibsonia, Pa., and his wife, Helen, recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Their son, Thomas, daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law, Kenneth Bruce, all are Purdue graduates. Hess retired in 1983 after a lifetime in education, the last 19 as superintendent of schools at Argos, Ind. He lived in Argos from 1917 until 2001, when he and Helen moved to Gibsonia. R. Dale Kelley, BS ’44, Nashville, Ind., spent 15 years in editorial work at two poultry publishing companies, with a short time out as assistant Extension agent in Elkhart County. He then moved to Brown County, where he taught math, science and agriculture at Brown County High School for 11 years. Kelley farmed part-time while he owned and operated Kelley Greenhouse in partnership with his wife, Marguerite. In 1990 he retired and moved to the farm where he grew up, which has been in the Kelley family since 1884. He and Marguerite have four children and five grandchildren. Dale Eizinger, BS ’47, Rochester, Ind., retired in 1982 after teaching for 35 years. James K. Letsinger, BS ’49, Bloomfield, Ind., cares for a herd of 45 beef cows and sells the calves as yearlings in the fall. Letsinger taught science and math for 10 years in the ’60s.
The Rev. Howard P. Addison, BS ’53, New Castle, Ind., is retired from the ministry. Hiram E. Wallace, BS ’53, and his wife, Christine, are retired and living in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Melvin F. Vance, BS ’60, Waynetown, Ind., and his wife, Lois, sold their Christmas tree and nursery business to their daughter and son-in-law. The Rev. Larry M. Ray, BS ’61, Lagro, Ind., and his wife, Wilma, are retired and living in their new home in Wabash County. Ray taught vocational agriculture from 1961 to 1965 at Northfield High School, then attended seminary from 1965 to 1969. He served United Methodist churches in northern Indiana until June 1, 2004. Phil Sparks, BS ’62, PhD ’65, Murray, Ky., retired Feb. 1 as director of telecommunications systems management at Murray State University. James A. Rupp, BS ’64, Clay City, Ind., retired from Cinergy/PSI in 1996 and is farming. Kenneth E. Schultz, BS ’67, East Granby, Conn., retired in June 2004 as vice president of information technology for Vertafore Inc. Charles E. Redinger, BS ’68, and his wife, Linda, live in Argos, Ind. They have four children, and six grandchildren. Jan A. Quivey, BS ’69, Culver, Ind., and his wife, Gerri, were married on June 25, 2004, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Charles C. Sullivan, BS ’70, Knightstown, Ind., is retired after 32 years of service to public health and education with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Thomas A. Westfall, BS ’70, Reynolds, Ind., is farming after retiring from a 30-year teaching career. James R. Hurley, BS ’71, and his wife, Ronda, were married Sept. 25, 2004. They live in Brownstown, Ind. Roger W. Gleitz, BS ’74, Leavenworth, Ind., and his wife, Karen Marie Harmon, became parents of a son, Isaac Scott, on Aug. 4, 2004. Thomas W. Mitchell, BS ’74, Somerset, Ind., is the principal at Justice Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Marion, Ind. He is also a new grandfather. His son, Dennis, (a Purdue grad) became the father of a baby boy last summer. Doc Cottingham, BS ’75, Attica, Ind., retired Feb. 1 after a 20-year career as a sales representative for Agrigold, CrustBuster/Speed King and Mathews Co. He now is devoting full attention to the family farms of over 150 years. Steven Carlson, PhD ’77, Ellsworth, Wis., received the Wisconsin Fertilizer and Chemical Association State Education Award for Leadership and Commitment to Educational Excellence. Theresa Leighton Casey, BS ’77, New London, Mo., received the Conservation Teacher of the Year Award from the Missouri Soil and Water Conservation Districts. She teaches biology and botany/zoology at Mark Twain High School in Center, Mo. She has been married for 25 years to Barry, and they have four children, Chris, Ashley, Brennan and Kyle. James L. Jordan, BS ’77, Somerville, Ohio, is completing requirements at Ohio State University for a doctoral degree in human and community resource development.
Robin F. (LeBrun) Trujillo, BS ’81, Southington, Conn., teaches high school biology to a home-school co-op. She also is the public affairs officer and aerospace educator for a Civil Air Patrol squadron. Doreen (McCollough) Grayless, BS ’82, BS ’01, Rossville, Ind., received her master’s degree in higher education administration from Capella University, Minneapolis, Minn., in December 2004. She is scholarship coordinator for Purdue’s College of Engineering. John A. Knesel, PhD ’83, Monroe, La., married Dr. Jenny Savage on April 13, 2004, in New York City. Joyce Meredith, MS ’83, is special assistant to the president at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She resides in Granville with her husband, Jeff Gill, (BA ’84), and their 6-year-old son, Chris. Beth (North) Shea, BS ’83, Springfield, Ill., and her husband, William, had a daughter, Beatrice, on May 3, 2004. Melanie B. Fullman, BS ’85, Bessemer, Mich., has been promoted to Bessemer District Ranger, Ottawa National Forest, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Tim Beaver, BS ’89, Columbus, Ind., is an Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officer in Bartholomew County. Andrea McCann, BS ’89, Linton, Ind., is a staff writer at the Linton Daily Citizen/Bloomfield Evening World. She received the 2004 School Bell Award from the Indiana State Teachers Association for excellence in reporting on education.
Jill R. (Elston) Deputy, BS ’90, Madison, Ind., is the assistant principal of E.O. Muncie Elementary School in Madison. Christiane (Cabral-Velho) Quinn, MS ’90, Columbia, Mo., is office coordinator of the Cambio Center initiative at the University of Missouri to provide research and outreach on Latinos and changing communities. Amy D. Hutson, BS ’91, recently moved to Indianapolis, where she is a field representative with Indiana Farm Bureau Inc. Derek R. Eisman, BS ’93, became water project manager for the city of Indianapolis in 2002. He and his wife, Lisa, live in Indianapolis with their children, Micah and Madison. Chad A. Berger, BS ’94, Plymouth, Ind., married Sarah Gilmer, BS ’98, on Oct. 18, 2003. Adrian Lee, BS ’94, and his wife, Nichole, live in Freetown, Ind., with his stepdaughter, Kimberlee, and son, Cameron. Lee moved to the Mojave Desert in southern California after graduation to work as an assistant hatchery manager at a tilapia farm. In 1996, he moved to Iowa to manage two fish hatcheries. In 2002, he accepted a quality assurance position at a pharmaceutical company. In 2004, he moved to Seymour, Ind., to work as a quality control chemist at Schwarz Pharma. Jesse D. Lyon, MS ’95, Portland, Ore., became a partner in the law firm of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP on Jan. 1. Lyon represents food and beverage, hospitality, winery, and agribusiness clients in business transactions and regulatory matters. In 2004 he received the “Forty Under 40” award from Portland’s Business Journal as one of the top business and civic leaders under the age of 40. Richard S. Rosenthal, PhD ’95, married Chrissie Geraghty in 2003 and they welcomed a son, Jacob Michael, in 2004. They live in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Mark E. Thessin, BS ’95, Buchanan, Mich., after nine years with Pike Lumber Co. has accepted a position as a buyer for International Veneer Co. Stan Ullerich, PhD ’95, Storm Lake, Iowa, has returned to the faculty at Buena Vista University as professor of economics after a stint as dean of the Siemens School of Business there. Bethany Clough, BS ’96, Buellton, Calif., on June 20 will celebrate her one-year anniversary of marriage to Michael O’Neil and the six-month anniversary of her own landscape architecture business. Carla (Maxwell) Leininger, BS ’96, Ann Arbor, Mich., and her husband, Michael, BS ’95, MS ’99, welcomed their son, Jack Thomas, on Jan. 28. He joins sisters Alexa, 5, and Grace, 3. Christy (Sporleder) Rosas, BS ’96, Cary, N.C., and her husband, Roland, added Logan Thomas to their family on Jan. 20, 2004. Shawn H. Sanders, BS ’96, Anderson, Calif., began working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Coleman National Fish Hatchery in Anderson, Calif., in September 2004. Brian Chew, BS ’97, Straughn, Ind., is shift manager at Outokumpu Stainless Inc. in New Castle, Ind., The company produced the steel for the United States Air Force Memorial in Washington, D.C. Chew and his wife, Kimberly, are the parents of Chloe, 8, Ella, 4, and Jackson, 2. Melissa Kasper, BS ’97, Tampa, Fla., is attending graduate school at the University of South Florida. Nancy M. (Pluimer) Kunk, BS ’97, Portland, Ind., and her husband, Andrew, are parents of a son, Joseph Donald, who was born Nov. 18, 2004. Tracy M. (George) Roberts, BS ’98, MS ’00, married Matt Roberts on Feb. 19. Del A. Brinson, BS ’99, Yorktown, Ind., and his wife, Jayne, announce the birth of a son, Cade Anthony, on April 5, 2004. Michelle L. (Henderson) Jacobs, BS ’99, Frankton, Ind., was married on June 26, 2004, to Jason Jacobs. Michael G. Jones, BS ’99, was married on June 12, 2004.
