Well before takeoff, Larry Murdock follows an exhaustive checklist to make sure his plane is air-ready.

The polymer skin on the 1928 Travel Air owned by Larry and Susie Murdock is as tight as a drumhead.

Murdock houses his pride and joy in a hanger at the Delphi Airport, a half-hour north of the Purdue University campus.

The seven-cylinder engine is capable of generating airspeeds of more than 150 miles per hour.

Murdock works hard at keeping the plane looking as new as the day it was built, way back in 1928.

The landing gear provides just enough of a boost for Murdock to reach the gas tank, as he tops off prior to a recent flight.

Since getting the 1928 Travel Air reconditioned and airworthy, the grin on Larry Murdock's face has become a permanent fixture.

For Murdock, every flight is a joyride, but serious business at the same time. Here, Murdock makes some last-minute checks before taking off on a recent flight.

Murdock prefers to take off and land on a grass strip adjacent to the asphalt runway at the Delphi Airport because grass landings are easier on the plane and on the pilot.

At nearly every opportunity, Murdock has been honing his flying skills, particularly his takeoffs and landings.
