Nine receive Distinguished Alumni Awards
Evandro Charduni Mantovani, MS '81, PhD
'84, senior researcher, EMBRAPA, the national research center for corn
and sorghum, Seta Lagoas, Brazil. Mantovani developed a planting disk
now used on 90 percent of Brazilian planters. (Agricultural and Biological
Engineering)
Bret D. Marsh, BS '81, Indiana state veterinarian
since1994. Marsh, who lives in Carmel, Ind., received the Distinguished
Alumni Award from Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. (Animal

Kenneth B. Rulon, BS '82, family farm
operator, Cicero, Ind. The Rulon farm encompasses approximately 5,000
acres in central Indiana. The Rulons also operate a 600-sow, farrow-to-finish
hog facility. (Agricultural Economics)
Janice Cervelli Schach, BS '79, dean,
College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities, Clemson University, Clemson,
S.C. Schach directs a school consisting of 352 faculty members. (Horticulture
and Landscape Architecture)
Sharrann E. Simmons, BS '77, MS '78, vice
president and general manager of Colloides Naturels International, France.
CNI is the world's top producer of acacia gum, used in beverages and
confections. Simmons oversees the company's U.S. operations, marketing
and product promotion. (Food Science)
J. Yun Tso, PhD '81, director of oncology,
Protein Design Labs, Inc., Fremont, Calif. Protein Design Labs is recognized
as a leader in the development of monoclonal antibodies for clinical
use. In his role as director of oncology, Tso's research evaluates promising
anticancer targets. (Biochemistry)
