World Food Prize ceremony
Photos by Tom Campbell
A steady rainfall in Des Moines on October 18th couldn’t dampen the spirits of Phil Nelson as he arrived at the Iowa State Capital for the World Food Prize ceremony.
Guests dined in and around the decorated rotunda of the Iowa State Capital.
Prior to the ceremony, Nelson chats with Norman Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the World Food Prize.
Dignitaries file into the Iowa House chamber, filled to capacity for the ceremony.

Nelson, Purdue’s Scholle Chair Professor of Food Processing, is the first post-harvest researcher to win the World Food Prize, presented annually since 1987.
Nelson and his wife, Sue, are applauded by the President of the World Food Prize, Ambassador Kenneth Quinn (left) and Iowa Governor Chet Culver.
The Purdue Glee Club surprised Nelson with a performance in the Iowa House chamber. Nelson was a member of the Glee Club as a Purdue undergraduate student.
A standing ovation honored the Nelsons at the conclusion of the World Food Prize ceremony.

Randy Woodson, Purdue’s Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture, led a large contingent of Nelson’s Boilermaker family to Iowa for the World Food Prize ceremony.
