1950s

John Mastalerz , MS '50, South Chatham, Mass., has published a book on gardening, Notes from John's Garden: A Collection of Essays about the Hows and Whys of Gardening. (2004). The book is available online at www.authorhouse.com/BookStore/ItemDetail~bookid~24909.aspx. Mastalerz retired in 1986 from Penn State University after 30 years of teaching horticulture courses and researching greenhouse flower crops.

Class notesG. Edward Schuh , BS '52, the Orville and Jane Freeman Professor of International Trade and Investment Policy at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, has received Brazil's National Order of Scientific Merit, Gra Cruz. This is Brazil's highest scientific award, the equivalent of the U.S. President's Medal of Freedom. The Brazilian government's Ministry of Science Technology honored Schuh for his lifetime contributions to Brazil and its agricultural institutions. He helped design and create Brazil's national agricultural research system, EMBRAPA.

Bill McVay , BS '53, MS '56, West Lafayette, and his wife Marilyn, celebrated their 50th anniversary June 12 with family and friends. The McVays, formerly of South Whitley, Ind., moved to Westminster Village in August.

Cletus Mitchell , BS '53, MS '57, Bowling Green, Ky., is a retired associate professor from Western Kentucky University. During his retirement, Mitchell has been a volunteer in agricultural projects in Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Armenia. He visited Kazakhstan in 1997 and 1998.

1960s

Robert Shleser , BS '62, MS '63, PhD '67, Waimanalo, Hawaii, has joined Clear Fuels Technology to develop a business converting agricultural biomass waste to ethanol.

Richard Stahl , BS '64, Plymouth, Minn., is chief credit officer for commercial credit for GMAC-RFC, a subsidiary of General Motors that provides securitization, investment and lending services to the residential mortgage industry.

Ralph Livengood , BS '65, recently retired as a biology teacher for the Vigo County (Indiana) School Corp. after 38 years of service.

1970s

Darrel Kesler , BS '71, MS '74, professor of animal sciences at the University of Illinois, spent the first half of 2005 in Egypt assisting in the development of educational programs at Cairo (Cairo and El-Fayoum campuses), Minia, Assiut, and South Valley universities. He also spent three weeks in Brazil working with a number of groups including Mata Ciliar (a wild feline protection association), the University of Sao Paulo at Pirassununga, indigenous people in the Pimentel Barbosa Indigenous Reserve, and the Brasilia Zoo. In May he was awarded the University of Illinois Campus Award for Guiding Under-graduate Research and the Karl E. Gardner Outstanding Undergraduate Adviser Award.

G. Robert Weedon , BS '77, DVM '81, recently completed his Master of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Weedon is the senior partner at the College Road Animal Hospital in Wilmington, N.C., and is an adjunct faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he teaches "Animals in Society" and is the faculty advisor for the Pre-Vet Club.

Janell Farmer , BS '78, Fowler, Ill., has been elected to the John Wood Community College Board of Trustees and is vice chairperson of the board.

Don Schlegelmilch , BS '78, and his wife, Karen, live in Galveston, Ind. His son, Evan, is a Purdue sophomore, studying ag systems management.

1980s

Daniel Kluchinski , MS '87, Rocky Hill, N.J., was recently promoted to County Agent I (Professor I) at Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension. He is assistant director of Extension and chair of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Management Agents.

1990s

Deborah Abbott , BS '91, Zionsville, Ind., is the director of communications and marketing in the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.

Jennifer Keenan , BS '92, West Lafayette, Ind., is a veterinarian at the Creekside Animal Hospital in Lafayette, Ind.

Steve Siegelin , BS '92, MS '95, and his wife, Laura (Zuercher), Associate '91, and their four children recently moved to Polson, Mont. He is the western regional department head of Montana State University Extension.

Andrew Carver , MS '93, PhD '98, has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. In his first five years at SIUC, he brought in more than $2 million of external grants for land use planning and rural economic development projects.

Rene Kwiat , BS '93, Fort Myers, Fla., is an environmental compliance project coordinator for Lee County Port Authority, which operates Southwest Florida International Airport and Page Field general aviation airport. She has been designated as one of 8,800 master-level Certified Hazardous Material Managers in the nation. The certification qualifies her to handle, manage and advise on hazardous materials related to environmental protection, safety, transportation, security and regulatory compliance.

Lisa Baker , BS '95, Carmel, Ind., and her husband, Steve, have a 2-year-old son, Reese.

Philip Sneed , BS '95, lives in Chillicothe, Mo., with his wife, Chris.

Brad Ponsler , BS '98, North Vernon, Ind., and his wife, Emily, are the parents of a daughter, Lydia Mae, born March 23.

Agung Tandjung , BS '98, MS '00, PhD '03, has taken on a new responsibility as director of research and development and business development with Nova Nutraceutical Technology at the company's headquarters in China. He has been stationed there since May 1. He previously headed a Nova Nutraceutical team that was based in Portland, Ore.

Benton Wisehart , BS '98, Atascadero, Calif., has accepted the position of field coordinator with the International Rescue Committee in Herat, Afghanistan. He will administer agricultural development and child protection projects in western Afghanistan.

Kevin Harren , BS '00, Mannington, N.J., is an environmental engineer for Valero Refining Co. He previously was an environmental coordinator with Lafarge North America. He and his wife, Stephanie (Shepler), BS '99, and son, Owen, have moved from New York to southern New Jersey.

Eric Steiner , BS '02, Washington, D.C., is on the professional staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, handling issues involving international food aid, nutrition, research, extension, and rural development. Steiner began law school part-time in August at George Mason University.

Cynthia Sudhoff , BS '02, Indianapolis, Ind., married Brian Portteus on May 28. She is development assistant with Girls Inc. of Indianapolis.

Matthew Wright , BS '02, New Castle, Ind., and his wife, Amy (Sarah) Wright, became parents of a son, Jacob Carson, on April 26.
