A couple of friends, Larry Kempany and Amy Fife, visited in May. Although
the trip had its low points, they both profess to have had a worthwhile
experience. I certainly enjoyed it, and I learned a lot about being
a good host in a foreign land.
We had some fruitful discussions about their jobs in corporate America.
I must say it affirmed my decision to be here now.
The rains have come and everything has turned green. All the world,
it seems, is planting. I've helped plant corn and even learned how to
plow with oxen. My furrows, however, were very crooked.
I also helped plant sugar cane. Now I feel like I have participated
in almost the full cycle of Central American agriculture, planting,
harvesting, hauling, cooking and making candy.
I continue to play soccer when I have time. I tutor reading at the
school and work with ADESCO, the community development association in
my town of Canton San Luis.
And for a short time I was a livestock owner. I bought some young goats,
fattened them up nicely, and we roasted them during a big party July
4. They were good. The whole event teetered on the edge of disaster
but never fell off the cliff. I was exhausted afterwards. I think my
friends had fun.
