What happens after parents who may not be particularly horse-savvy say "yes" when their child asks for a horse?
"Our First Horse: Considerations Before You Buy," a DVD produced by the Purdue University agricultural communication department in partnership with Purdue Extension, helps parents gain a better understanding of the equine world.
"It's meant for families with children who are thinking about or have recently purchased a horse and need some guidance on how to get started," says video producer Jamie Loizzo.
On the DVD, Purdue Extension specialists Colleen Brady and Mark Russell address some common questions and concerns parents may have about horses. Parents often worry that their child may lose interest in the horse after the novelty wears off. Riding lessons are a good way to gauge a child's interest before making the investment in a horse, Brady says.
Once the decision is made to buy a horse, Russell says finding a horse that matches the rider's skill is a key factor. Beginning riders need an animal that is safe and reliable, while families who want to show a horse will want to factor in athletic ability, movement, confirmation and breed characteristics.
Other important items parents should consider before buying a horse include age, breed and size of the horse; whether or not to board it at a stable or keep it at home; feeding; vet care; and transportation.
The price of the DVD is $15. You can purchase it at Purdue Extension county offices or online at the Our First Horse Web site www.ces.purdue.edu/horse.
