Weather-wise Web site

The climate is just right for Hoosiers who want to learn more about the weather.

In an effort to satisfy the public's interest in weather, the Indiana State Climate Office, located in Purdue University's agronomy department, is partnering with the National Climatic Data Center and other U.S. regional climate centers. The new partnership will help climate office staff coordinate weather observations with experts around the country, conduct climate research and make long-term weather forecasts.

"Not only do people want data, such as how much rain fell to cause overnight flooding, but they want to know why," says Ken Scheeringa, associate state climatologist.

Indiana residents can find this improved weather-related information at www.iclimate.org.

"The site is an excellent resource for students, teachers and people in business," says Dev Niyogi, Indiana state climatologist and Purdue agronomy and earth and atmospheric sciences professor. "The information could be used for class projects or lesson plans or may help construction companies factor weather into building schedules." He also says that farmers could use the information to get a better idea of possible rainfall totals or changes in frost days and to monitor drought conditions.
