Changing of the guard

After nearly 35 years of service to Purdue University, David Petritz, director of Purdue Extension, retired June 30. Petritz, who was appointed director in 1999, also serves as the university's associate vice provost for engagement.

"Purdue has one of the leading Extension organizations in the nation, due in large part to the quality of Dave's leadership," says Randy Woodson, Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture.

Vic Lechtenberg, vice provost for engagement and former dean of Purdue Agriculture, says Petritz has been a tireless advocate for Purdue Extension. "The support in Indiana for Extension is as strong as it is anywhere in the country. Dave should take a lot credit for that," Lechtenberg says.

In looking to the future, Woodson says Purdue Extension will strive to stay current and vital. "For instance, economic development efforts have stretched the organization to grow beyond its traditional mission of agriculture and consumer and family sciences. Part of the strength of Extension is an ability to serve diverse clientele," he says.

Petritz credits the entire Purdue Extension staff with mobilizing to meet changing needs. "Part of what we do in Purdue Extension is look ahead to the challenges that are coming and prepare people to deal with those things," he says.

Petritz came to Purdue in 1972 as an assistant professor of agricultural economics. In 1989, he was named assistant director of Purdue Extension and leader of the Agriculture and Natural Resources program area. He served in this capacity until he became director.

A national search for a replacement is underway.
