New course promotes understanding across cultures

Purdue Agriculture’s ongoing mission to build awareness of diversity issues moved another step forward with an innovative new course, Communicating Across Cultures, offered for the first time this spring.
“This is the first course of its kind,” says Pamala Morris, assistant dean of Purdue Agriculture and director of diversity programs, who teaches the class. The course, which covers such topics as race/ethnicity, gender issues, age, social class, disabilities and religion, provides a new option for students to meet the College of Agriculture’s new multicultural understanding requirements.
Volunteer faculty help facilitate lab sessions through role-playing, panel discussions and group activities. “The experiential learning format helps students immerse themselves into the issues,” Morris says. “They’re not just standing there as observers.”
