200 B.C. to 300 A.D. – Korea and Japan cultivate soybeans.
1860-1865 – Civil War soldiers use the soybean to make a version of coffee.
1898 – The USDA begins importing soybean varieties to the United States.
1904 – George Washington Carver at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama discovers that soybeans are a good source of protein and oil.
1920 – The National Soybean Growers Association originates in Camden, Ind.
1920s – Dr. John Harvey Kellogg uses soybeans to develop meat substitutes.
1941 – Henry Ford develops soybean-based plastic and uses it for automobile trunk lids.
1994 – Soybean-based crayons win the first Indiana Soybean Development Council/Purdue University Soybean Utilization Contest.
2002 – USDA's Agricultural Research Service begins heating its buildings in Beltsville, Md., and fueling all its diesel vehicles, generators and equipment sterilizers with B20 made from soybeans.
2005 – More than 72 million soybean acres are grown in the United States.
2005 – U.S. soybean crop is valued at almost $17 billion; Indiana's soybean crop is worth nearly $1.45 billion.
