Equine industry more than horseplay

New statistics on the horse population in Indiana show a horse of a different color when compared to previous statistics.

The last nationwide horse census, which was conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, estimated the number of horses in Indiana at 140,000 as of Jan. 1, 1999. Data from an Indiana equine impact survey conducted during 2001-02 by the Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service (IASS) at Purdue, pushed the head count to 160,000.

“ We found 20,000 more animals with a more-detailed study,” says Ralph Gann, former IASS state statistician of Indiana who led the survey, a cooperative effort among IASS, Purdue, the Indiana Horse Council, Indiana Horse Racing Commission and the Indiana Livestock Promotion and Development Fund.
