| The
future of Purdue Agriculture

"Planning without action is a daydream. Action
without planning is a nightmare."
Japanese proverb
In the past year, there has been a lot of talk
at Purdue University and in
the College of Agriculture www.agriculture.purdue.edu
about the future. We've thought carefully about what the future
holds for the food, agriculture, and natural resource system and
sought to create a strategic plan that builds on our strengths,
improves our overall quality and prepares us for the challenges
the future will bring.
Purdue Agriculture has benefited from a wealth
of input from stakeholders across the state, including many of you.
As we formulated this plan, we talked with people involved in all
aspects of agriculture, food production, and the natural resource
arena, parents, and employers of our students. Our faculty and staff
have thought carefully about the key issues the school must address
and have helped us craft a sound plan that will guide our decisions
in the next 5-10 years.
Our strategic plan employs a two-tiered approach.
It includes both goals targeted at improving what we do in research,
Extension, and teaching
and goals targeted at moving the school in some new directions that
we believe will be critical in the future.
As we thought about the future of the food,
agriculture, and natural resource system and the needs of those
we serve, we identified five strategic goals that define Purdue
Agriculture's future directions. They are:
- To assure that Indiana's crop and animal
agriculture is technologically competitive.
- To improve the quality of the natural and
urban environments.
- To generate "new economy" jobs.
- To form more effective research and education
partnerships.
- To expand basic research knowledge to advance
food and agriculture systems.
In addition, Purdue Agriculture also will become
more diverse, will engage youth more effectively across Indiana
and will excel in all that we do. We are committed to achieving
the goals we have set, and we will continue to set new goals, too.
And, we will be sure to share our progress with you, our stakeholders,
as we strive to become even better.
