A Résumé of Service Learning

Here are more examples of how landscape architecture faculty and students learn through community service:

  • Developed landscape designs for the new Crown Point High School in Crown Point, Ind. Designs incorporated existing buildings, athletic fields, parking lots, roads, storm water management and plantings.

Submitted landscape architecture plans to Lafayette Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Lafayette Mental Health Association and the YMCA of Greater Lafayette. Worked with the United Way to create a master plan to unify all 26 community facilities.

Completed work on the Wabash Heritage Corridor, which includes trails, scenic byways and park development. Two miles of trails have been completed in Delphi, Ind., and seven more miles are planned. Also, students have assisted several other communities in planning additional sections of the Wabash Heritage Trail.

Presented designs for a new entrance to the Indianapolis Children's Museum to the museum board of directors and trustees. Ideas included colorful gardens and art displays in the parking areas.

Created a plan to transform a one-third acre West Park site from prairie land into a garden labyrinth in Carmel, Ind.

Provided an overall master plan for Norbutt Park, in Columbus, Ind.

Developed a master plan for the renovated Purdue North Course, the Kampen Golf Course, with a detailed planting plan for a small portion of the course.

Prepared 13 designs for the "Festival Grounds" at Grant Park in Chicago. The solutions were exhibited at the John David Mooney Foundation in Chicago.

Designed and planted a spring flower display at Tippecanoe Mall in Lafayette.
