Purdue University junior Jill Steiner has a schedule that’s hectic even by college-student standards. She carries a double major in agricultural communication and agricultural economics, takes a 17-credit-hour courseload, works 10 hours a week and has, on average, three meetings a night. But rather than finding this schedule daunting, Steiner describes it as “exciting.”
Steiner’s schedule will not be slowing down anytime soon. In June 2007, Gov. Mitch Daniels appointed her to a two-year term on the Purdue Board of Trustees. “I’m honored to be on the board,” Steiner says. “Serving as the student trustee and helping to make changes that guide the university into the future is something I know I will remember for the rest of my life.”
Steiner, from Berne, Ind., has an impressive record of campus involvement. She is a member of Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, Agricultural Council, Agricultural Ambassadors and the Purdue Foundation Student Board. She was also a member of the 2005-06 Patty and Martin Jischke Leadership Class and is a past state FFA officer.
Steiner is the second consecutive College of Agriculture student to serve as the student trustee. Rachel Cumberbatch, a 2007 animal sciences graduate, preceded Steiner.
“We are fortunate to work with such outstanding student leaders and proud that they call the College of Agriculture home,” says Dale Whittaker, director of academic programs and associate dean of agriculture.
