1907—Agronomy established as a department.

1913—First master’s in agronomy awarded.

1919—Agricultural Experiment Station became the cooperator with USDA to conduct soil surveying in Indiana.

1920—Seed certification introduced by the Indiana Corn Growers Association in cooperation with Purdue.

1921—Aerial photography used in soil mapping. Jennings County, Ind., became the first in the United States to be mapped solely on aerial photographs.

1926—Purdue researchers began developing cultivars of wheat resistant to leaf rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia recondite.

1934—First doctorate in agronomy awarded.

1940—Oat program established that resulted in outstanding improvements in lodging resistance, disease resistance and adaptation to the warm temperature conditions in Indiana.

1949—Agronomy Farm purchased.

1954—In that year and the years following, six spring oat varieties were distributed, including Clintland, Bentland, Newton, Putnam, Clintland 60, and Putnam 61. These varieties made up a substantial part of the oats grown in the North Central region.

1959—96 percent of the oats and 88 percent of the wheat grown in Indiana were from varieties developed in the Purdue-USDA cooperative small grains research program.

1966Laboratory of the Application of Remote Sensing (LARS) established.

1971—Development and patenting of the Purdue Athletic Turf system.

1978—Development of high lysine sorghum.

1980s—Transfer of resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus from wheatgrass into wheat began.

1982—John Axtell elected to membership in the National Academy of Science.

1985Crop Diagnostic Training and Research Center established.

1987—Stanley Barber elected to membership in the National Academy of Science.

1990Water Quality Field Station established.

1990s—Mechanisms for reducing impact of striga on crops in Africa developed.

1992—Philip Low elected to membership in the National Academy of Science.

1998—Turf Research Center established.

2007Beck Agricultural Center completed.
