A lesson in leaves
By Samantha Cain

Image: leaf"Why does this happen?" "What caused that?" "How does this work?" These are just a few of the types of questions elementary school teachers hear in their classes on a daily basis. Purdue's 4-H Youth Science Series is helping teachers provide some of the answers.

"Why Leaves Change Color," the latest educational package for elementary teachers, helps teachers explain a very interesting and natural phenomenon to students. "Watching leaves change colors is an outdoor science lab that we see each fall in Indiana," says Natalie Carroll, Purdue Extension 4-H specialist. "Children and adults wonder about the natural world from time to time. Learning the answers helps capture that interest in nature and makes learning science fun."

The package features a short video, an educational guidebook, a fact sheet and a color transparency for classroom use. Activities, which are designed to be both educational and entertaining, include leaf identification, determining signs of autumn, trading leaves with a school in another region of the country and developing an audio tour of fall leaf specimens. Information on the package is available from The Media Distribution Center .
