Lay of the land
One of the most difficult jobs that communities
face is making land use decisions that balance economic development
with protecting the environment.
No one knows this better than Purdue's
Land Use Team. In the last three years, the team has
helped train more than 1,300 local plan commission members
and staff.
"Land planning is one of Indiana's top challenges,
and the outreach efforts of this team have helped rural and
local communities work though planning and zoning decisions," says
Purdue Agriculture Dean Victor Lechtenberg, who honored the
team earlier this year with the 2002
Agricultural Dean's Team Award.
The 22-member group is the first-ever collaboration
of county educators and campus specialists devoted to working
on a public issue. One of the team's most recent efforts
is a Web site that offers resources for anyone who has an
interest in how decisions are being made that affect land
use in Indiana. |
