To protect and preserve

A small woods in Henry County has been a Purdue research property for nearly 40 years. During the summer, it also became a state-designated nature preserve.

The 34-acre Stout Woods, which was given to Purdue in 1964 by Sam and Stella Stout, has been kept from farming and grazing use through five generations of the family.

In the past year, an interpretive trail for school children was developed on the property by the Purdue departments of Forestry and Natural Resources and 4-H, in cooperation with the Red-tail Conservancy and the Division of Nature Preserves.

The preserve is open to the public.
