The facts about FMD
By Olivia Maddox
In response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Great Britain, Purdue Agriculture and state and U.S. agriculture officials launched a public education campaign to reduce the chance of the disease infecting Indiana livestock.
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, swine, goats, deer and other cloven-hoofed animals. While FMD is not a significant health concern for humans, people can carry the virus on their clothes, shoes and bodies and spread it to susceptible animals.
Purdue Extension, the Animal Disease and Diagnostic Laboratory, Indiana State Board of Animal Health and U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service have compiled the following resource materials:
-
FMD Web site with links to educational materials and resources.
-
FMD Extension publication.
-
Informational flyer for producers.
-
Brochure outlining precautions for 4-H fair exhibitors.
-
FMD signs for display at county fairs.
-
Video news release of travel guidelines for people who have visited Great Britain.
-
Educational displays at the Indiana State Fair and Farm Progress Show.
