Food science honors 10 outstanding alums
The Department of Food Science has honored 10 professionals with the
2002 Outstanding Food Science Award.
"These honorees are recognized for excellence in industry, academia,
government or other endeavors related to food science," said Phil
Nelson, head of the department.
Winners are:
- Fred Billerbeck, PhD '59, Fremont, Mich., retired
from Gerber Products as the director of administration and services
of the research division.
- William Gorman, BS '49, Stuart, Fla., retired from
Kraft Inc. as vice president and director after 37 years with the company.
- David Hettinga, MS '65, Minneapolis, Minn., the
chief technical officer and vice president of corporate research for
Land O' Lakes.
- David Lineback, BS '56 (chemistry), of Silver Springs,
Md., the director of the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied
Nutrition at the University of Maryland.
- John Luck, BS '49, MS '51, PhD '54 (biology), Savannah,
Ga., who worked for Armour, Glidden and General Mills Inc.
- John Nelson, BS '52, MS '53, Indianola, Wash.,
an adjunct professor in the Department of Food Science at Purdue.
Nelson worked at General Mills Inc., F.H. Peavey & Co., American Maize
Products, Roman Meal and McCormick & Co. Inc. He retired from
McCormick, where he was vice president of science and technology.
- Paul Seib, BS '58 (chemical engineering), PhD '65
(biochemistry), Manhattan, Kan., a professor in the Department of Grain
Science and Industry at Kansas State University.
- Robert Sellars, MS '55 (bacteriology), PhD '57 (dairy
bacteriology), PhD (honorary) '92, Waukesha, Wis., retired from Chr.
Hansen's Laboratory in 1993 as senior vice president of technology
and quality assurance after 30 years of service. Chr. Hansen is a Danish
biotechnology company.
- Vernon L. Singleton, PhD '51 (chemistry), Davis,
Calif., a professor emeritus at the University of California Davis.
- Elaine Wedral, BS '66, Sherman, Conn., president
of the Nestle Research and Development Centers in the United States.
