New Vegetable Varieties 2010

What better way to melt the snow than a cozy read through garden catalogs with all their promise of mouth-watering produce for the coming season! Here's a look at just a few of the new vegetable seed offerings for 2010. Try a few alongside your old standby favorites so that you can compare performance in your garden.

Basil 'Amethyst Improved' is a dark purple basil with large, thick, curled-down leaves similar to the classic variety Genovese, but on a compact plant reaching just 16-20 inches. 60 days. (Jo)

Beet 'Taunus' boasts 6-7 inch long deep purple-red cylinders of firm, sweet, juicy flesh, with paper-thin skins. These beets were made for slicing! The young tops are great for beet greens. 65 days. (C, Ju)

Brussels Sprouts 'Churchill' is an early producer of large, smooth sprouts on a vigorous stocky plant. 90 days. (Jo)

Bush Bean 'Beananza' is a new dwarf French bean that bears slender, 7-inch stringless filet beans for several pickings through summer. Pick them regularly to keep them producing. 55 days (B)

Cucumber 'Sultan' is a beit alpha-type cuke (seedless, sets fruit without pollination), dark green, spineless, thin-skinned with good disease resistance. Pick early for mini cukes. 56 days. (Jo)

Lettuce 'Flying Saucer' Series is a blend of deep-green, red and yellow frisee lettuces with crisped, ruffled leaves. Although this new series is resistant to tip burn, it is still best grown as a cool-season crop. 50 days. (B)

Lettuce 'Skyphos' is a large, butterhead-type, dark red with contrasting green centers. 47 days. (Jo)

Muskmelon 'Sugar Cube' is a personal-sized mini melon with sweet, deep orange flesh on disease-resistant plants. 80 Days. (S)

Okra 'Millionaire' is a fast-growing, vigorous producer; pick pods when 3-4 inches long and keep them picked frequently. The lovely large lemon-yellow flowers are also edible and can be stuffed or used as a garnish. 50 days. (Jo)

Pepper 'Dulce' is classified as a sweet pepper, but sports jalapeno flavor and appearance, but without the heat. 65 days green, 85 days red ripe. (Jo, S)

Tomato 'Big Pink' is a medium-sized (8-10 oz.) tomato with rosy smooth skin on moderate-sized plants. Indeterminate. 75 days. (B)

Tomato 'Red Pearl' bears large, grape-type fruits with tender skin and few seeds. Plants have high resistance to fusarium wilt, intermediate resistance to late blight. Indeterminate. 58 days. (Jo)

Tomato 'Tye-Dye' is a unique new bicolor gold-and-red hybrid promising to deliver heirloom flavor similar to Big Rainbow, Pineapple and Georgia Streak, but with bigger yields, consistent form and better disease resistance. The 7-ounce orange fruits are marbled with red streaks. Indeterminate. 78 days. (B)

Tomato 'Orange Wellington' is a large, 12-ounce bright orange fruit with nearly seedless flesh. Indeterminate. 75 days. (B)

Zucchini Squash 'Green Tiger' bears 8-inch long, cylindrical fruits with striking alternating stripes of dark and light green. 55–60 days. (B)
