May 2008 Welcome to Purdue Agriculture Report, an e-newsletter for business and community leaders on research, academics and Extension across Indiana and around the globe. There's a lot to learn, but momentum will continue I first came to Purdue University as a graduate student in 1982, but one of the things I've been taught since May 1 is that there's a lot more to learn. In these first weeks in the dean's office, I have learned a great deal. Purdue Agriculture won't be standing still during this interim period while a search for the new dean is underway. One critical piece of work is the development of the next strategic plan for Purdue Agriculture. Over the summer months, we will continue to look at the Purdue Agriculture brand and what it stands for. We are also seeking input from our stakeholders as we map our future. I much appreciate the warm welcome that I have received, and I look forward to keeping the momentum going. Online tool aids in local planning, economic development Land use and economic development planning takes time and money - two things few cities and counties have in abundance. Thanks to an online resource, they don't have to. The Local Decision Maker (LDM) is a comprehensive planning tool that provides almost instant data for producing a socioeconomic and environmental community snapshot, as well as a portrait of how that community might someday appear. It was developed by Purdue University and the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant. The LDM contains government- and geographic information systems-based data in the areas of population, environment and natural resources; land use and land cover; education; and economy and labor markets.There is no charge to use the LDM, located at http://ldm.agriculture.purdue.edu.
Two of the priorities for Indiana's new property tax reforms were to make property tax relief permanent and to deliver tax relief now, in 2008. Taxes in 2008 and 2009 will be lower than they were in 2007. But in some counties, the tax reform will deliver more relief in 2008 than in 2009. Some homeowners could see a tax increase between those years. Call it the "tax echo." To help make property tax relief permanent, whole local government functions will be removed from the tax in 2009. The big one is the school general fund, which supports school operating budgets, mostly teacher pay. Next biggest are the county welfare funds, which are mostly aid to children in trouble. Several smaller funds will be removed, too. This will reduce property tax rates. Sponsored by the Indiana Office of Energy and Defense Development and the Energy Center at Purdue University's Discovery Park, the conference will raise awareness of opportunities for wind power in Indiana. "Most of northern Indiana is well-situated for the location of wind farms," said Jimmy Bricker, Purdue Extension director in Benton County. "That's because upper-level wind speeds are high enough to make operating the turbines profitable." Additional information is available online at http://www.energy.IN.gov. Begun in 1986, the diagnostic center is recognized throughout the Midwest for its hands-on approach to teach the art and science of diagnosing and dealing with crop problems. The core group of faculty and staff develop teaching curricula, design and establish in-field demonstration plots, and conduct in-the-field workshops for producers, Extension educators, agronomists, crop consultants and professionals in the seed, fertilizer and agricultural chemical industries.The center also is responsible for the Purdue Extension publications "Corn and Soybean Field Guide" and the "Forage Field Guide."
