Forest mast, wildlife workshop Oct. 16 in northeast OhioWritten Thursday, October 08, 2009Discover good food trees for wildlife and how to grow them in “Forest Food for Wildlife: Enhancing Mast Production,” a public workshop to be held Oct. 16 in Ashtabula County. The class will look at: Nut-, seed- and berry-producing tree species, such as oaks, walnuts and hickories; the nutritional value of those foods — called “mast” — to wildlife, including deer, squirrels and wild turkeys; and ways to manage woodlots to produce more mast and attract more wildlife. The class will be taught by Marne Titchenell, OSU Extension wildlife specialist, and Kathy Smith, OSU Extension forestry specialist. Titchenell said participants will learn to grow “desirable trees that will provide valuable resources for wildlife for many years to come.” It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4-H Camp Whitewood, located 7893 S. Wiswell Road, in Windsor. Registration, due by Oct. 9, costs $35 and includes lunch and materials. Registration is available online at http://woodlandstewards.osu.edu . Individuals who don’t have Internet access or prefer to mail can register by sending their name, address, telephone number and payment to Ohio Woodland Stewards Program, Ohio State University, School of Environment and Natural Resources, 210 Kottman Hall, 2021 Coffey Rd., Columbus, OH 43210. Checks should be made payable to The Ohio State University. Participants can qualify for five hours of continuing education credit under the Ohio Forest Tax Law program. The class is sponsored by Ohio State University Extension’s Ohio Woodland Stewards Program, which helps landowners make well-informed forest-management decisions and, in the end, better Ohio forests.
