Workshops to train conservationists to help landowners

Written Friday, September 18, 2009

Beginning Sept. 30, Purdue University will offer Wildlife Management training workshops for employees of the Natural Resource Conservation Services District, Soil and Water Conservations Districts, and Purdue Extension.

The workshops will introduce conservationists to the four major components of wildlife habitat, which are food, cover, water and space. Information on habitat management practices and invasive species control will also be provided.

"This program allows participants to be exposed to a wide range of professionals in the wildlife industry, to help them better understand how to plan and help landowners who are interested in managing wildlife habitat," said Robert Chapman, Purdue Extension forest wildlife specialist.

The two-day program will include eight hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of field observations.

Workshop locations and dates include:

* Crawfordsville, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, Schenk Farm, 6042 W. Division Road

* Fort Wayne, Oct. 7-8, Allen County NRCS Office, 3718 New Vision Dr.

* Butlerville, Oct. 19-20, Southeast Purdue Ag Center, 4425 E County Road 350 N, P.O. Box 216

* Linton, Oct. 28-29, Triple H Gun Club, R.R. 1 Box 313

The cost to attend this workshop is $85. Links to the maps of the various sites can be found at: http://www.fnr.purdue.edu/nrcsmaps.pdf . Contact Chapman at 812-458-6978 for registration information.
